The Marriage of Expressive Arts Therapy and Jungian Theory:
An Eight-Session Supervision/Consultation Group
This eight session seminar will explore the interconnections between C. G. Jung’s Analytical Psychology and Expressive Arts Therapy: each an image/symbol based psychotherapy approach.
Through case consultation, arts based experiential process and didactic presentation, participants will learn how to use expressive arts therapy processes individually and in groups, families and couples and understand the images and symbols through a Jungian lens.
Guidelines:
The consultation/supervision will be arts based. So we will be using the arts as supervision tool and an integral way of communicating.
The first session I would like everyone to bring an arts piece in any modality(ies) to express one of the following where he or she is right now in his or her professional life as an expressive arts therapist; what you would like to receive from this group experience or your sense of Jungian psychology or expressive arts therapy or some combination. This will help us get to know each other literally and imaginally. I have a CD/tape player and many instruments, space for movement. Let’s discuss if you need any other materials or AV items. I also have instruments, many sandplay figures, visual arts materials, scarves and drama props to use during our sessions. Each person will have 10 minutes to introduce himself or herself, helping to co-create our temenos.
After the first week, each session, one people will present. Each will have an hour for presentation, arts processes and feedback. Each participant will prepare about 10-20 minutes, letting us know your questions and we will explore and process it to deepen your work. Each presenter will also create an aesthetic response to the client as part or your presentation, so that your imaginal life is present and activated too.
Group feedback is an active part of our process. I will weave EXA and Jungian theory into each presentation to deepen your understanding and expand your own EXA repertoire. I am leaving the format flexible in other ways to address your desires. We will discuss this further in the first session.
Cancellation Policy and Fees: I am requesting each person commit to all 8 sessions. No refunds or no cancellation policy for missed sessions.
Place and Directions: The group will be held at my office: 57 Post Street, Ste. 602, SF, CA 94104. This is between Montgomery and Kearny, right across from the Crocker Galleria. After entering the building, take the elevator to the 6th floor and go to room 602, the waiting room before hand, then at 9 AM I will come to the waiting room and we will proceed to my office. After 9 AM, please come directly to the office, Rm. 611. I would suggest public transportation or parking at the Stockton Sutter Garage (very inexpensive about $5.00 for 2 hours). Parking on the street might be difficult at that time of day.
